Faculty of Engineering at Ruhuna offers a wide range of new specialties, specially Mechanical, Electrcal & Civil Engineering disciplines taking its students into a more modern world of engineering giving a broader perspective on engineering education with due emphasis on Humanities, Social Engineering and Management.

This Faculty has been the trailblazer in introducing the course unit system (Semester System) among the Faculties of Engineering in Sri Lanka. This Faculty, which is rapidly developing, holds unlimited promise to daring students who are keen to try out a novel engineering degree programme that is catering to the emerging needs of a globalized economy.

History

The faculty was started in year 1999 with intake of 100 students. The first batch of students graduated from the university in 2003.

Dr. Kirthisena was the first dean of the faculty and served from 1999 to 2001. Professor Lakshman Jayathilaka served as the second dean of the faculty from 2002 to 2003 and Dr. Kithsiri M. Liyange as the dean till 2007.

Present Status

At present Dr. A.M.N Alagiyawanna serves as the dean of the faculty. There are 800 students doing their studies in the faculty. In 2006 the intake was increased up to 200 per batch.

  • Electrical and Information Engineering
  • Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

  • Best student project gold & Bronze Awards at TECHNO 2009
  • Best student paper award in the Information and Communication Technology(ICT) and Social Transformation track at the ICIAfS 2008, 4th International conference on Information and Automation for Sustainability, organized by IEEE
  • IESL awards for best undergraduate projects in Electrical Engineering discipline and Mechanical Engineering discipline, year 2008
  • Gold award at the National Engineering and Technology Awards 2008 from IESL for the best engineering projects displayed at TECHNO 2008 exhibition
  • IET YMS Annual technical conference best paper award in the Electronic, Telecommunication & ICT

Student life

Student are actively participating on sport and other extra curricular activities. The facilities for those activities are minimal since the faculty is new and located away from the main university.

 town was one of the most affected areas from Tsunami in 2004.
2004 Indian Ocean earthquake

. The faculty was not affected since it was about 5 km away from the coast. One student lost his life and many lost their family members and homes.
