. The population was 2,051 at the 2000 census. The community was named "fairplains" because it was located at the geographic point where the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains

living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.3% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.80.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 20.1% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 males.
