 audience. When Alam's volume Jibanananda Das: Selected Poems came out in 1999 on the occasion of the poet's birth centenary, it was greeted with widespread acclaim. The book has proved to be popular with readers since then. The first edition having sold out, a second, expanded edition was published in 2003. Alam's work is now regarded as perhaps the best (and certainly the most wide-ranging) translation of Das in the English language. Although it is very difficult to maintain rhyme, meter, figure of speech etc. when translating, Professor Alam enjoys that sweet pain!

Dr. Alam started teaching at the University of Dhaka after the Liberation War of Bangladesh

in 1971 where he is a Professor now; also taught at Clemson University, USA, and University of Viswa Varati, India as Associate Professor and Visiting Professor, respectively. Much later, he joined East West University, Bangladesh as an Adjunct Faculty and still teaches there besides the University of Dhaka. As for education, he earned his PhD from the University of British Columbia, Canada; an MA from Simon Fraser University, Canada; also has BA and MA in English Literature from the University of Dhaka. For him, "teaching is fun." He likes "going into the classes" more than anything else.
