 in Four Forks, FM 524 travels northwest as a narrow two-lane, tree lined road. Entering Sweeny, the route crosses the Union Pacific Railroad, winding through Sweeny with several sharp turns. The road becomes Sweeny's Main Street, traveling through the heart of town. Passing City Hall, and the town's lone traffic signal, 524 heads 5 miles (8 km) to the northwest cutting through the middle of the ChevronPhillips refinery and intersecting with State Highway 35, in what was once the thriving community of Old Ocean. After a half-block concurrency with 35, the route continues 9 miles (14.5 km) to the northwest through sparsely populated areas, intersecting Farm to Market Road 1301 outside the Danciger community.

Historic routes

FM 524 once traveled from its southern terminus in Four Forks, eastbound to State Highway 36 in Brazoria. This is now part of FM 521.

Terrorist concerns

Farm to Market Road 524 travels through the ChevronPhillips refinery in Old Ocean. Officials plan to close down the highway in the wake of terrorist concerns after September 11th, 2001. Detour signs have already been posted, pointing drivers to turn onto County Road 359 (a more dangerous and narrow route), travel 3 miles (4.8 km) east to Farm to Market Road 1459, turn north going one mile (1.6 km), and at Highway 35, going south to Old Ocean and the intersection of FM 524.
