History
The route was originally designated in 1942 from Lingleville east to Stephenville, replacing SH 68, which went northeast to Dallas on US 67 before 1939. By 1945, the route had been extended westward, reaching the end of FM 96 in Desdemona. By 1948, the route had been extended further westward, reaching Gorman, which was the original endpoint of SH 68. FM 96 was cancelled and combined. The highway was extended west in 1957 and 1983 over the previous routing of SH 6State Highway 6 (Texas)
