Fat-Tone
Encyclopedia
Anthony "Fat Tone" Watkins (April 29, 1981 – May 23, 2005) was an American
rapper
. During his career, he worked with several artists, including Nate Dogg
, Butch Cassidy, Mac Dre
, E-40
, Yukmouth
, C-Bo
, Killa Tay
, Messy Marv
, JT The Bigga Figga
and San Quinn
. Fat Tone can be heard on a wide variety of local and California rappers' albums and mixtapes. He is featured throughout the compilation brought out by Frisco Street Show called 5 Shots of Cognac. He has also appeared on Mr. Stinky and the Vigilanty Squad's projects often in the earlier years. He is also most known for popularizing the slogan "It's Real" which was put on his obituary in memory of the rapper. Other slogans he has popularized throughout Kansas City are "Ya No", "Ay Ay Ay", "OG Stack-a-Dolla" and "It's Nothin'. Fat Tone also used to produce his own beats from time to time.
His lyrics were largely based on his neighborhood known by those around him as "Five One", better known as 51st, a particularly rough area in midtown Kansas City, Missouri
. Over the years Fat Tone was affiliated with various well-known California rappers
, including guest appearances and other collaborations.
and grew up on the 51st Street neighborhood in Kansas City's Middle Core. During the beginning of his career, he started off rapping with a group of people from his neighborhood and formed a group called "The OG's". With the OG's, Tone, completed a few projects but later decided to go solo.
Upon going solo, Fat Tone met California rapper Killa Tay
who presented his first solo album under his new moniker The Vett entitled "Only In Killa City". His first big single from this album was "It's Real" which featured Fat Tone's then friend named J-Rock who also passed some years back. Fat Tone's popularity began to soar with this album throughout the city of Kansas City
. He quickly became a big hit in the town by performing at parties and doing other shows and appearances throughout the Midwest
and the San Francisco Bay area
. With his rising popularity also came controversy.
In 2001, shortly after his trip to California, Tone was arrested and charged with double homicide in connection with a drive-by shooting that killed a pregnant woman and her unborn baby. He spent nine months in jail before the charges were dismissed. Jackson County prosecutors complained that the witnesses refused to cooperate.
Subsequently, Fat Tone recorded his second solo album also presented by Killa Tay
titled "The Stick Up Kid". On this album, Fat Tone rapped on the charges that he had faced and was acquitted of and made remarks critical of the Kansas City Police Department.
On October 17, 2003, Fat Tone and a group of rappers were riding home from an interview with KKFI 90.1 radio station when a black Ford F150 Pick-Up Truck pulled up aside of them and opened fire. It resulted in a rolling drive by, Charles Littlejohn who was driving, tried desperately to elude the shooting and when they successfully escaped, Fat Tone ended up being the only man in their car wounded. He was shot in the chest.
His next album I'mma Get Cha then was released to the streets. Unlike his other two releases, this one wasn't presented by Killa Tay
, but instead it was presented by C-Bo
, a rapper who he had been in affiliation with since his first release and who had been with him during the time when he was shot.
After this release, Fat Tone then started to release his own projects without a presenter. This was also the start of Fat Tone creating Mixtapes. His first Mixtape was "It Is Real" which was followed by his second titled I Am The Streets. On the cover, Tone was standing in a graveyard wearing a tan dickie suit, a pair of Blue Chuck Taylor
classics, and Blue Rags covering his entire head, standing with his hands in Prayer position in front of a tombstone which read the name Mark MacGowen. Fat Tone accused MacGowen of being a snitch
, so he portrayed him as deceased on this album cover.
Subsequent to the last Mixtape, Fat Tone released his third mixtape entitled "Sky's The Limit". Following the release of this mixtape, a prominent bay area rapper, Mac Dre
, was murdered on Highway 71 in Kansas City. Due to the coincidental lyrics
featured on Tone's current mixtape suspicion was raised that Fat Tone had killed Mac Dre. The police then named Fat Tone as a person of interest in the case, though he was never formally named a suspect.
Tone then released his fourth mixtape titled "My Hood Betrayed Me". On this mixtape, Fat Tone plead his innocence in the murdering of Mac Dre
over the 50 Cent

had promised to set Tone up a meeting with famous rapper Snoop Dogg
in hopes of getting him signed to Snoop's label. Tone and his friend Jermaine "Cowboy" Akins went to meet with Snoop Dogg and Mac Minister. Shots from a passing car hit both Tone and Cowboy multiple times. Police had noticed a car in a vacant construction site sitting with its lights on. When they went to check it out, they found both Fat Tone and Cowboy dead on the scene.Fat Tone's body was found slumped over the vehicle's seats, and Cowboy's body was found on the street, near Tone's body. Watkins was later buried at XII Gates Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
It was later alleged that Mac Minister had set up Tone in retaliation for Mac Dre's death the previous year. The body of a prostitute, 21-year-old Lee Danae Laursen, was later on found in Fairfield, CA in November 2005; Laursen had been in the company of Mac Minister (Andre Dow) and Jason Mathis in Las Vegas when Tone was murdered. In March 2006, Dow was arrested by FBI officials and both Dow and Mathis were indicted on murder charges in the Watkins murder.
Dow was later found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit murder.
