The song follows a three chord pattern and ends with an unexpected turn of tempo and direction, a commonly used technique for Pavement. "Father to a Sister of Thought" is about as close to alt-country or jangly-guitar rock that Pavement ever got, but the pedal steel hardly 'countrifies' the tune. The music video for "Father to a Sister of Thought" features the band playing together in front of a western themed props painted by Steve Keene
