 to the first Plenary Council of India. In 1953 it became a first grade college with the introduction of degree courses in Economics, Commerce and Zoology. Construction of the auditorium and the eastern wing and the introduction of degree course in Botany, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics followed in quick succession. Expansion and consolidation continued with the completion of St. Thomas Hostel and St. Goretti Hostel, a separate block for B.Sc. Chemistry with a sports pavilion attached to it, playgrounds and the N.C.C. Office. Post graduate courses in Botany and Commerce were started in 1961; Physics and Zoology in 1964 and Economics and English in 1965.

The construction of a modern open access library and Bishop Jerome Hall in 1966-67, the opening of St. Joseph's Guidance and Counselling Centre in 1980 and the introduction of the degree course in Psychology in 1981; post graduate degree course in Chemistry in 1995, Malayalam in 1998 and Mathematics in 1999 were major milestones in the subsequent history of the college. In May 1984 the Centre for Research and Postgraduate Studies was completed. The Department of Zoology and Department of Commerce were upgraded as Research Centres under Kerala University in 1988 and 1999 respectively.

Fatima Mata National College with Fifty Eight years of service behind her, remains the pride of the Roman Catholic (Latin Catholic) Diocese of Quilon.
This Institution Of higher learning is dedicated to the task of equipping young men and women through education, the meaningful and responsible role in India's national life. The Fatima motto PER MATREM PRO PATRIA (through the mother to the father land) thus encapsulates the idea of Marian devotion, acquired at Fatima college, as instrumental in the cultivation of social responsibility.

History

Fatima Mata National College was founded in 1951 by His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. Jerome M. Fernandez, the first native Bishop of Quilon, with a view to providing facilities for higher education in the diocese. The college was formally inaugurated on the 29th of December, 1952 by His Eminence Norman Thomas Cardinal Gilory, Papal Legate to India.
Fatima was elevated to the status of a first grade college with the introduction of degree courses in Commerce, Economics and Zoology. This was followed by introduction of courses in Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Physical resources were added in the form of Hostels, a sports pavilion, Chemistry block, an auditorium, playgrounds, an NCC office, hockey stadium, language lab, basket ball courts, a botany garden, computer labs and research centres.

Milestones and Achievements
1961 Commencement of Post Graduate courses in Botany and Commerce started the college on a path of steady growth and expansion.

1964 Post Graduate courses in Physics and Zoology were introduced.

1965 Post Graduate courses in Economics and English were introduced.

1966-1967 A modern open-access library was opened and an auditorium named Bishop Jerome Hall was constructed.

1980 Opening of St. Joseph’s Guidance and Counselling Centre was a major step forward in catering to the psychological needs of the student community, paving the way for a holistic development of one’s personality.

1981 Introduction of Degree course in Psychology was another unique distinction.

1984 Construction of Centre for Research and Post Graduate Studies took care of the special needs of the post graduate students.

1993 Beginning of Degree Course in Polymer Chemistry was a first in the University of Kerala.

1995 Beginning of Post Graduate Course in Chemistry.

1997 Beginning of Degree Course in Travel and Tourism Management was possible thanks to the UGC under the self-financing scheme.

1997–1998 Computer labs opened in Depts. of Mathematics and Commerce keeping in view the growing needs of students and the ever-changing nature of higher education.

1998 Post Graduate Course in Malayalam was introduced.
Upgrade of Dept of Zoology as a Research Centre opened up research facilities.

1999 Post Graduate Course in Mathematics.
The Dept of Commerce was recognized as a Research Centre.
Opening of a Language Laboratory for English enabled the use of the electronic media for language study.
Construction of a Hockey stadium was completed to encourage better participation in sports.

2000 Golden Jubilee celebrations were the highpoint in the history of the college.

2001 Accreditation by NAAC at Four star level.

2001–2002 Vocational courses like B.Sc BioTechnology, B.Sc Computer Science, B.Com Computer Applications and BCA were started under the Institute of Distance Education.

2004 M.Sc in Computer Science and MBA were introduced.
The Dept. of Physical Education opened a Fitness Centre both for the staff and the students.
Computer networking of the College Office, Library and the various Departments was initiated under the MPLAD Scheme of Shri. N.K. Premachandran, M.P., former student of the college.

2005–2006 Departments of Economics and English were elevated to the status of Research Centres.

2006 UGC - aided career - oriented courses (six in all) were introduced.

2007 NAAC Reaccreditation (B++).

Founder

Rt.Rev.Dr.Jerome M.Fernandez, the first native bishop of Quilon, was the great visionary who founded the college for the educational upliftment of the Latin Catholics of the Diocese of Quilon.
