Ferenbalm is a municipality
in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district
in the canton
of Bern in Switzerland
.
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 5.2% and transportation infrastructure made up 5.7%. 17.8% of the total land area is heavily forested and 1.3% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 54.2% is used for growing crops and 12.3% is pastures, while 1.7% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.
Ferenbalm lies on the plateau
between the Saane and Bibern rivers. The municipality does not have a central town; it is instead made up of the villages of Ferenbalm, Vogelbuch, Kleingümmenen, Rizenbach, Biberen, Jerisberg, Jerisberghof, Haselhof and the exclave Gammen.
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP
which received 48.2% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS
(16.7%), the FDP
(9.5%) and the Green Party
(8.8%).
The age distribution of the population is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 23.6% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 63.2% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 13.2%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. History
Ferenbalm is first mentioned in 1123 as villa de Balmis. Since the 16th Century it was called Feren-Balm to differenate it from Oberbalm.Geography
