During his career, he worked in several clubs in his country, as well as in Portugal
.
, before moving to neighbours SD Compostela
in 1989. During his six-year spell at the latter, he led the club from the fourth
to the first division
.
After helping Compos maintain its top flight status in 1994–95, Santos stayed in the region, signing with Celta de Vigo
and remaining there for two years. He started 1997–98 in Portugal
with Sporting Clube de Braga, being sacked after a few months (Braga eventually reached the domestic cup
final) and returning to his country with Sevilla FC

Leaving Sevilla in the summer 1999 after the club's top division promotion, Santos spent the following years at CD Tenerife
