Fernando Po Creole is one of the names under which the English-lexicon Creole of Bioko Island (formerly known under its colonial name Fernando Po
) is known. However, speakers of the language use the designation Pichi
or Pichinglis for their language (Yakpo 2009; Lipski 1992).
The language is an offshoot of the Krio language
of Sierra Leone
, and was brought to Bioko by Krios who immigrated to the island during the colonial era in the 19th century.
