The Zombie Master attempts to do this to Castle, but fails due to Castle's familiarity with hypnosis. Enraged, the Zombie Master turns up the power on the ray generator, which causes the whole thing to explode. The Zombie Master is killed and Castle gains superpowers. He decides to use his newfound abilities to become the superhero Fiery Mask.
This origin is recounted within the limited series The Twelve, however it is later revealed that the story is a fiction. His true origin has yet to be revealed.

Fictional character biography
Jack Castle, a renowned scientist, is called in by the police to help investigate a case in which zombies were abducting homeless men. During his investigation however, he is captured by a zombie and brought before "The Zombie Master," a 20' tall mad scientist who is kidnapping the hobos and then using a special ray to turn them into undead servants.The Zombie Master attempts to do this to Castle, but fails due to Castle's familiarity with hypnosis.
