Throughout its length, Fifth Avenue caters to the retail industry in the form of grocery stores, 99 cents stores, clothing and shoe shops, and numerous restaurants and fast food chains. Most of these business use only the first floor of the two to four story buildings that line the avenue. The upper floors are usually occupied by several residential apartments. From 24th Street to 36th Street, Fifth Avenue forms the western border of the Green-Wood Cemetery
. The other side of that portion of the avenue has mainly light industry and some single family residences.
The Jackie Gleason Bus Depot lies on the east side of the avenue between 36th and 39th Streets. New York City Transit's Brooklyn surface Fifth Avenue Line runs along the length of the avenue as the B-63
with stops at an average of two blocks apart.
