Of the built up area, industrial buildings made up 1.1% of the total area while housing and buildings made up 4.8% and transportation infrastructure made up 2.5%. Power and water infrastructure as well as other special developed areas made up 2.8% of the area 14.9% of the total land area is heavily forested and 1.1% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 66.9% is used for growing crops and 4.5% is pastures. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.
It is located in the Grosses Moos, a particularly productive area with nearly black soil in the Bernese Seeland

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP
which received 47.1% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS
(21.7%), the Green Party
(10.8%) and the FDP
(9.2%).

Finsterhennen is first mentioned around 1220 as Freineshun and in 1453 as Veisten Hennen. In French it was known as Grasse Poule.Geography
