Fizi is a territory
and town in the province of Sud-Kivu

. It is located in the south of the province, on the shore of Lake Tanganyika
. The region has had a long history of independence from Kinshasa
. It was the location of the maquis set up by Laurent-Désiré Kabila
in 1967, as well as the birthplace of his son and current President Joseph Kabila
. Throughout much of the Second Congo War
, the town was disputed by numerous armed groups.
