History

The school was built in 1967 and has had many expansions since then, including a state-of-the-art auditorium. The school was formerly called "Floyd Central Junior-Senior High School" until the opening of Highland Hills Middle School in 2004. The classrooms are on average 150 square feet (13.9 m²) smaller than average classrooms. The renovation is planned to bump Floyd Central's enrollment capacity from 1,750 to 2,200 students. Along with the new classrooms, the project calls for construction of a new football stadium. The old stadium has been torn down to provide Marching Band students with a practice field during marching band season, and it will be used as parking lot when the marching band season is over. The new stadium will be built next to the baseball and soccer fields, across the street from the school. The main gym will also see a slight renovation as the flooring will be resurfaced. Along with the resurfacing, the floor designs will be modified to look more appropriate. FCHS is currently a one-story school, which will also change with construction.

Athletics

Floyd Central has a rich history of great athletic achievements. Among the most decorated sports are wrestling, tennis, golf, and cross country. The wrestling team had won virtually every sectional and regional championship. The tennis team has gone to semi-state repeatedly but has failed to win the elusive state championship (8 final fours). Since semi-state was part of the state tournament, the boys' team has made it to every event. The girls' team is even more decorated, with four state titles from 1989 through 1992. The boys basketball team was highly successful throughout the 1970s and 1980s, winning numerous titles at the various stages of the state tournament. Cross Country, although, is the school's most successful sport holding 5 of the 7 school's state titles.(more than any other sport combined) Cross country also has the most semi-state titles. Recently, football has well represented the school with the first of several HHC titles in 1996, along with Sectional wins and Regional appearances in 1998 and 2009. Floyd Central Dazzlers Dance Team Coached by Todd Sharp has Won 9 consecutive National Championship Titles in Large Varsity Pom Division at Universal Dance Association High School Dance Team Championships, which is more than any High School in the Nation.

Performing Arts- Band, Orchestra, Choir, and Theater

Floyd Central Theater has been recognized by the Educational Theater Association as one of the top five theater programs in the nation. Multiple productions have been selected as main stage productions at the International Thespian Festival and four invitations to represent Indiana at The International Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Floyd Central Orchestra has been successful at the state, regional, and national levels. They have been selected for each of the last 22 ISSMA State Finals Competitions- the longest such streak in the contest's history. The orchestra won the 1995 ISSMA State Championship, and were runners-up in 1996 and 1998. The orchestra recently was the runner-up in the 2010 National Orchestra Cup competition held at Lincoln Center in New York, NY. Floyd Central's marching band has also been quite successful, appearing at the ISSMA state marching band competition in 1987, 1990, 1993, 1994, 1995, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2010, and 2011. The marching band's most successful years have been 1993, 2010, and 2011, when they achieved 6th place. Floyd Central's symphonic band has also been highly recognized, having appeared in many ISSMA state finals competitions. In addition to marching and symphonic band, Floyd Central has a volunteer pep band to play at basketball games. The pep band is quite popular with the fans. The music department as a whole has been nationally recognized twice as a Grammy School, being designated as a Grammy Signature Gold Award School in 1998-1999 and as a Grammy Signature School in 2002.
