A fly-killing device is used for pest control
Pest control
Pest control refers to the regulation or management of a species defined as a pest, usually because it is perceived to be detrimental to a person's health, the ecology or the economy.-History:...

. A fly-killing device typically attracts flying insects, for example houseflies, wasps, moths and mosquitoes. The insects are killed or released.

Types of Fly Killers

Fly bottle

A fly bottle or glass flytrap is a passive fly trap. In the Far East it is large bottle of clear glass with a black metal top in which there is a hole. Bait is placed in the bottom of the bottle in the form of pieces of meat. Flies enter the bottle in search of food and are then unable to escape because their Phototaxis

leads them anywhere in the bottle except to the darker top where the entry hole is.

European fly bottles are more conical, with small feet that raise a half an inch, with a trough about an inch wide and deep that runs inside the bottle all round the central bottom opening. In use, the bottle was stood on a plate and some sugar was sprinkled on the plate to attract the flies, which eventually flew up into the bottle, whose trough was filled with beer or vinegar, into which the flies fell and drowned. The trough was also sometimes filled with a dangerous mixture of milk, water and arsenic
Arsenic
Arsenic is a chemical element with the symbol As, atomic number 33 and relative atomic mass 74.92. Arsenic occurs in many minerals, usually in conjunction with sulfur and metals, and also as a pure elemental crystal. It was first documented by Albertus Magnus in 1250.Arsenic is a metalloid...

.

A variant of these bottles were the fly traps for agricultural use to fight the Mediterranean fly and the olive fly, used since the early 30's of last century. They are smaller, without feet and the quality of the glass is thicker. Samples of this type can be seen at: http://les.mosqueres.org

Modern versions of this device are often made of plastic, and can be purchased in some hardware stores. They can also be made from plastic drink bottles.

Fly swatter

A flyswatter

and 3-5 inches in width. The fly swatter is ideally lightweight, perhaps to aid quick acceleration of the swatter to overcome the quick reaction time of the fly, or to avoid damage to other objects.

Glue board fly killer

A glue board is a capture device with a strong adhesive. An index card covered in strong adhesive is situated in an enclosure so that when the flies come into contact with it, they remain stuck and die there. Their remains are removed through the use of vegetable oil and then removing the oil with dishwashing detergent and a water rinse.

Fly Sticker

The "Fly Sticker" (also known as a fly strip, fly paper, fly ribbon or fly tape) is another way of sticking flies to adhesive so that they can be starved/killed. It has an exposed adhesive strip, making it more stick-prone than a glue board. A fly strip is a small cardboard tube with a pin on the top. It is used by pulling the pin off the top (usually covered with wax), removing the adhesive 'fly strip' and using the pin to attach it to a ceiling.

Electric grid / fly zapper

An electric grid (fly zapper or bug zapper

through high voltage on an electric grid. When an insect contacts the grid, it is given a fatal electric shock.
