. It is a part of the Spånga-Tensta borough. Despite its location in a predominantly residential suburban area, this community has much of what smaller villages used to have, e.g. a bakery, grocery shops, carpenters, hairdressers located along the main road - Spångavägen. This is a testimony to the fact that it used to be its own village, and a summer residence area at the beginning of the 1900s. Flysta is today a part of Stockholm municipality with a 15 minute drive from proper down-town.

History

The history of Flysta goes far back however, with several archæological remains from the early Bronze Age. On one hill, called " Flystaberget" there is a mound from the Bronze age

. At this time, the see levels were almost 25 meters higher than today, which means that Flysta was a coastal community, and much of what today is Flysta was once submerged (today the inland lake Mälaren is a few kilometers away). The habitable area increased significantly during the Iron Age, and what had once been see floor now became fertile soil. The area was settled by farming families around year 1000. Since Christianity had not yet gotten a strong hold of Scandinavia, these families used to bury their dead close to their farms, and there are several mounds today which can be seen in the area. The oldest documented evidence of a settlement in Flysta is from 1375, when a farmer Gunnar in "Flyastum" is mentioned. Fly in the word Flysta probably originates from the Swedish word "gungfly", which refers to the swampy conditions that existed in the marshes in the area. The oldest map from the area in 1636 shows Flysta farm. This farm later expanded to a village, which by the end of the 18th century had grown into a small village which by the end of the 18th century had grown to four farms.

Living in Flysta

Today Flysta is a residential area with an increasing number of young families moving in from the inner city of Stockholm. The area has become very popular due to the closeness to downtown stockholm (25–35 minutes by train/bus), the opportunity to buy old houses for renovation, the good child-care, and the village spirit which has prevailed. The latter can be explained by the fact that there are still a few dwellers in this area where the houses has been passed down through generations, and hence with historical significance.

There is, despite the urban sprawl around, a traditional village center with a bakery, grocery store, a furniture store, a shoe-maker/laundry service, a hairdresser, two pizza houses, and a movie rental place all within the Flysta area.

To think about when buying a house in Flysta

Flysta is increasingly becoming a place to which people want to move. There is, after all, a break in property taxes.

It should be considered that Flysta is underneath the landing flight path of Bromma. Essentially there are 10 planes in the morning and 10 in the evening during working days, however, it is not a major disturbance. Also, the noise from the Spångavägen road is not a great disturbance. Overall, the many trees in the area keep it low. There are a lot of smaller roads in the area, where children play, so if one wants to take off in one's Ferrari it may cause some unappreciated dissonance in the neighborhood.
