. She is the granddaughter of Paul Twine, Sr., a founding member of the Catholic Interracial Council of Chicago, a civil rights organization that played an important role in the social justice movement of the 1960s.
Twine is an ethnographer and a feminist race theorist who has published more than 50 articles, reviews, and books. She has conducted field research in Brazil

Her most important theoretical contribution is the concept of racial literacy
