on 6 December 1947. On 9 December 1979 he was ordained a Roman Catholic priest. Pope John Paul II appointed Francisco Chimoio to the position of bishop of Pemba on 5 December 2000. The bishop's consecration took place on 25 February 2001. On 22 February 2003 John Paul elevated him to the position of archbishop of Maputo; he is the head of the catholic church in Mozambique.
