Frank Huntington Stack (aka Foolbert Sturgeon) (b. 1937 in Houston, Texas, United States) is an American underground
cartoonist
. Working under the name Foolbert Sturgeon to avoid persecution for his work while living in the bible belt
, Stack published what is considered by many to be the first underground comic book, The Adventures of Jesus, in 1962.
He graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a BFA in 1959.. He was editor of the Texas Ranger student humor magazine from 1958 to 1959. He was also a Professor of Art at the University of Missouri
, and did stints teaching at Appalachian State and Virginia Tech. In addition to publishing several articles in The Comics Journal
, he has contributed comics to Zero Zero
, Blab!, Snarf and Rip Off Comix anthologies. In 1972 Frank Stack contributed to The Rip Off Review of Western Culture
with "Jesus Goes To The Faculty Party".
