The Fred Darling Stakes has been sponsored by Dubai Duty Free since 1996, and it is now also known as the Dubai Duty Free Stakes. It used to be run on a left-handed course over a slightly longer distance, but it has been contested over a straight 7 furlongs since 1999.
The race serves as a trial for the first fillies' Classics of the European flat season. The most recent participant to win the 1,000 Guineas was Lahan
