Frederick Augustus Forbes

Frederick Augustus Forbes (30 September 1818 - 9 July 1878) was a Speaker of the Queensland Assembly in Queensland, Australia.

Biography

He was born in 30 September 1818 in Sydney, New South Wales to Francis Ewen, a merchant and his wife Mary Ann Taboweur. He attended William Cape's school and The King's School, before spending several years at sea. When his father died he took over his father's store in Liverpool in 1842 before marrying Margaret Milner 1844. He soon moved to Ipswich where he opened another store and became involved in the Queensland Separation movement. There in Liverpool Forbes became involved in politics and was elected in an Ipswich seat to the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1860-1863. He later was elected to a Warrego sat from 1865 to 1867 and a West Moreton seat from 1868 until he retired in 1875, during which time he spent two years as Speaker, from 1871 to 1873.

Though Forbes declared bankruptcy in 1870 because of the 1866-67 money crisis, Forbes still remained a wealthy man and was able to continue investing in businesses until his death. Forbes died as a result of an accident at Ipswich, Queensland, 9 July 1878 at the age of 59 and was survived by eleven out of seventeen children.
