Von Essen was a member of the knights and nobility in the Parliament of Sweden
1862-1863 and 1865–1866, the first chamber 1867-1874 and 1877-1906. He was finance minister at the Bildtska Government formation in 1888, and six years. He was a member of the Conference of Presidents Reichsmarshal 1902-1906 and 1894-1911.
He was Swedish pansarbåtsföreningens councilor.
