Freeform Hardcore is a term used to describe a subgenre of Happy Hardcore

. The genre developed gradually as conventional Hardcore slowly became more influenced by trance. The music is generally more instrumental, being known for its 4/4 beat, prominent acid lines, and often rolling bass and hard trance leads. It was originally widely known as Trancecore.
Freeform has come to prominence largely through Sharkeys mixes on the Bonkers series. Labels such as Thin 'n' Crispy, Nu Energy Collective, FINRG amongst others have specialized in Freeform music as well as the pioneering artists.
An influential artist in the genre, Kevin Energy, label owner of Nu Energy, describes Freeform not as a genre, but rather as a state of mind. The movement away from a systematic routine and to go against the grain are the described as the fundamentals of being Freeform.
Over the years many artists and labels have entered and left the industry. As of 2011, Nu Energy Collective and Kevin Energy have announced their retirement, and the last music release. As a label, Nu Energy has formed a pedigree of new Freeform artists to fill the gap. Douglas, A.B., Endemic, Nick 235, Arkitech, Eryk Orpheus, Synthwulf and many others will continue producing. Hardbeats Collective has been formed in the wake of the 'NEC'. FINRG in Finland has clocked its 100,000th download as a free digital label. Rebuild Music has also grown in stature as a beacon for Freeform, with albums such as 'Heavyweight Freeform'.
