Futars are a fictional race in the Dune universe
, introduced briefly in Heretics of Dune
and appearing in Chapterhouse: Dune and Hunters of Dune
. They are primitive, humanoid creatures, brought as captives to the "million planets" by the Honored Matres
. Much is still unknown about these strange creatures except for clues given by the Bene Gesserit

, and various encounters with them by the Matres themselves.
Futars are genetically wrought humanoids, a mingling of human and feline, with a limited capacity for intelligence and the capability of speaking simple sentences in abbreviated Galach. According to Tleilaxu Master
Scytale
, Futars cannot be reproduced in axlotl tanks. Futars apparently use their voice-like scream to immobilize Honored Matres, however the scream has no effect on Reverend Mother Dortujla. They are bred and controlled by humanoids they call Handlers, who seem to use various techniques involving special pheromone
s to imprint the Futars with a strong, seemingly unbreakable loyalty to them. According to various excerpts, Futars can find and destroy Honored Matres, and are rumored to have been created and used by the "Ones of Many Faces" in their devastating attack against the Honored Matres in The Scattering. However, at one point ghola-Duncan
asks Bellonda why they are told that Futars hunt Honored Matres, when former Honored Matre Murbella
has told him that she knows nothing about it. The Handlers and the Futars appear to be disturbed by some threat other than Honored Matres.
