and Captain Peter Ellis told the Canadian Forces and the Canadian government they really need sealift capacity for the 21st century. The former Minister of National Defence, David Pratt was directly involved in several major procurement projects totaling $7 billion including the Joint Support Ship and the Amphibious Assault ship project, and declared that in the next decade the Canadian Forces must expect to engage in the sort of operations it has experienced over the past decade.

Concept

According to the Direction générale de l'Armement (DGA), the Royal Canadian Navy and DND might show an interest in the French designed and built Mistral class amphibious assault ship. The ship can carry a significantly large military force with equipment and vehicles in "fighting order", enabling the Canadian Forces to face armed opposition ashore. The Future Canadian Amphibious Assault Ship can rapidly disembark personnel and equipment in waves using landing craft and/or helicopters. The ship can offload equipment and personnel in the face of armed opposition. They can also be used as large hospital ships and support humanitarian operations. The Canadian Alliance also called for four “support/amphibious ships, at least one dedicated helicopter/light carrier”. First considered in the year 2000, the design is still unclear. Aircraft

As with any amphibious assault ship, a possible Canadian amphibious assault ship would be expected to carry a number of helicopters for transportation as well as possible offensive/defensive roles. DND has requested that the ship be capable of carrying a minimum of six attack helicopters. In 2003, the former Major General
