. Galesburg High School was established in 1861 in downtown Galesburg. It has since moved to Fremont Street on the west side of town. The school is located on 80 acres (323,748.8 m²) of land with a full, lighted football field, two baseball fields, two softball fields, a soccer field, a full gymnasium, auditorium, and a separate building with another gym and a swimming pool.

2007 diploma controversy

In an effort to make the graduation ceremonies more orderly, the school administration enacted a policy, effective 2007, of not awarding diplomas to students who were disruptively cheered as they crossed the stage. When five students in the class of 2007 were denied diplomas, the case drew national media attention. Community Unit School District#205 relented on June 7 and gave the students their diplomas. Four of the affected students started legal proceedings against the district, claiming that they were unfairly targeted by the policy.
