History
The Intermediate grade was introduced in 1949 with Kilrickle winning the first final. The competition was played for until 1953 when it was suspended. It was introduced again in 1959 and continued to be played until 1967 when it was again suspended until 1970 when it was again introduced. It has been played for each year since. The winners of the Intermediate championship are promoted to Senior. Between 2003 and 2009 the beaten finalists were also promoted. The only year that this was not the case was in 1998 when Craughwell were promoted. They were the beaten finalists having lost to Athenry but because Athenry already had a senior team so they couldn't have a second one. The Galway Hurling Board decided to leave the competitions as they were but Craughwell objected. Pearses were the team to be relegated so a compromise was struck where Craughwell played Pearses in a promotion/relegation game and the winners were promoted.Roll of honour
