Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania
Encyclopedia
Garnet Valley was founded in late 2006 addition of an additional Garnet Valley "city name" for the 19061 zip code. The name was created in for residents of Bethel Township
and Concord Township
who are within the 19061 zip code to distinguish themselves from residents of Upper Chichester Township. The reasoning for this is that residents of Bethel Township and Concord Township are a part of the Garnet Valley School District
and the residents of Chichester, Pennsylvania
(19061) are a part of Chichester School District
(including the historic town of Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania
). The default "city name" for the 19061 zip code was Marcus Hook (for Marcus Hook Borough).
Other acceptable names for the zip code were Ogden, Trainer (for Trainer Borough), Linwood (for Lower Chichester Township), and Boothwyn for Upper Chichester Township, but the only acceptable names are now Bethel Township, and Concord Township (which also consists of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania
and Concordville, Pennsylvania
). The Boothwyn name derives from the census-designated place
within Upper Chichester Township (as is the case with Linwood and Lower Chichester Township). The residents of Bethel Township and Concord Township sought for a new identity to use for their communities (because the zip code "city names" are often erroneously used in place of the actual municipal names). The USPS has officially made the change for those residents, who now have the following address:
Garnet Valley, PA 19060
This change allows residents of the 19061 to officially use the Garnet Valley "city name" for their addresses without the risk of the mail getting delayed or rejected. According to the Bethel Township Web site, a post office will be built soon (which will be shared with neighboring Concord Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania
), and Garnet Valley received its own ZIP code. On July 1, 2009, Garnet Valley's ZIP Code 19061, was changed to 19060. The USPS Post office will be built bearing the title, "Garnet Valley Post Office: ZIP Code 19060".
The name comes from its school district, Garnet Valley School District
, located in neighboring Concord Township which currently has the address of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania
