Garrad Hassan
Encyclopedia
GL Garrad Hassan is one of the world's leading wind energy
consultants. GH also consults in offshore wind, marine renewables, and solar energy. GH was founded in 1984 by Dr. Andrew Garrad and Dr. Unsal Hassan and has since grown to have about 750 employees with offices in 18 countries.
The company has acted as the Independent Engineer for lenders and investors in more than 21,000 MW of wind projects and has carried out energy assessments for over 80,000 MW.
GH has developed the industry standard wind turbine design and analysis software GH Bladed and a leading wind energy analysis program called WindFarmer
. GH also offers the leading third party SCADA
system GH SCADA, which has been used to streamline operations for large wind farms with multiple turbine types (each with its own SCADA system). GH Forecaster is now used for over 3,000 MW of wind plant in at least 9 countries around the world. GH Forecaster serves 30% of Texas' wind power generation and can be combined with GH SCADA to enhance the forecasting capability and provide ease of operation to the end user. Andrew Garrad was also quoted regarding forecasting in a recent technology review of wind energy in The Economist.
As the wind industry matures, GH is leveraging its expertise in wind operations (with 20% of the world's wind farms analyzed) to position itself to fill a foreseen growing need for wind plant asset management. Asset Management and Optimization Services (AMOS) have thus been developed as a value added
for wind power managing owners
seeking to identify significant sources of lost revenue. In efforts to address other rapidly growing renewable energy
fields, GH is modifying its GH Bladed software for the marine renewables industry to create GH Tidal Bladed and is also developing its consulting business for the solar industry.
In August 2009 Garrad Hassan (GH) joined Germanischer Lloyd (GL) to form a fully integrated technical assurance and consulting company for renewable energy, GL Garrad Hassan. The companies merged to become a worldwide leading independent provider of consulting, engineering, turbine design, certification, measurement, project management, strategic advice, inspection services and software products for renewable energies. The joint entity will employ 600 highly qualified engineers at 34 locations around the world. GL had already acquired the Canadian wind energy consulting and engineering company Hélimax and the German company WINDTEST. In addition, the offshore wind expertise of Noble Denton particularly in project management for offshore windfarms was added to the GL Group in April 2009. The global renewables business will be managed by Dr. Andrew Garrad.

WindFarmer
WindFarmer is wind energy software used to calculate turbine wake impacts, energy yield, and site conditions for determining turbine suitability. WindFarmer uses wind modeling inputs from WAsP or CFD software. WindFarmer is developed internally by the independent renewable energy consultant GL...

Renewable energy is energy which comes from natural resources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, and geothermal heat, which are renewable . About 16% of global final energy consumption comes from renewables, with 10% coming from traditional biomass, which is mainly used for heating, and 3.4% from...
