General somatic efferent fibers
Encyclopedia
The *spinal* somatic efferent neurons (GSE, 'somatomotor, or somatic motor fibers), arise from motor neuron cell bodies in the ventral horns of the gray matter
within the spinal cord
. They exit the spinal cord through the ventral roots, carrying motor impulses to skeletal muscle
.
Of the somatic efferent neurons, there exist subtypes.
Cranial nerves also supply their own somatic efferent neurons to the extraocular muscles
and some of the muscles of the tongue.
Gray Matter
"Gray Matter" is a short story by Stephen King, first published in the October 1973 issue of Cavalier magazine, and later collected in King's 1978 collection Night Shift. It is set in the same area as King's novel Dreamcatcher.-Setting:...

Spinal cord
The spinal cord is a long, thin, tubular bundle of nervous tissue and support cells that extends from the brain . The brain and spinal cord together make up the central nervous system...

Skeletal muscle
Skeletal muscle is a form of striated muscle tissue existing under control of the somatic nervous system- i.e. it is voluntarily controlled. It is one of three major muscle types, the others being cardiac and smooth muscle...

- Alpha motor neurons (α) target extrafusal muscle fiberExtrafusal muscle fiberExtrafusal muscle fiber is a term given to standard muscle fibers as to distinguish them from intrafusal muscle fibers. Extrafusal muscle fibers are innervated by alpha motor neurons and generate tension by contracting, thereby allowing for skeletal movement...

Cranial nerves also supply their own somatic efferent neurons to the extraocular muscles
Extraocular muscles
The extraocular muscles are the six muscles that control the movements of the eye . The actions of the extraocular muscles depend on the position of the eye at the time of muscle contraction.-List of muscles:-Importance:...
