George Miles Watson, 2nd Baron Manton (1899–1968).
Miles Watson was born near Leeds, Yorks., on June 21, 1899, the eldest of 4 sons of Joseph Watson, 1st Baron Manton
(1873–1922), the Leeds soap magnate, and (Frances) Claire Nickols, da. of Harold Nickols of Sandford House, Kirkstall, Leeds. He succeeded as 2nd Baron Manton on the death of his father in 1922, who suffered a heart attack whilst out hunting beside his sons with the Warwickshire foxhounds, near his new mansion of Compton Verney
. He married twice. Firstly on April 18, 1923 Alethea Pauline Mary Alys Langdale, the 2nd. daughter of Colonel Philip Joseph Langdale, OBE, JP, DL, of Houghton Hall
, Sancton, Yorks., who obtained a divorce in 1936. Secondly he married on June 1, 1928 Leila Joan Reynolds daughter of Major Philip Guy Reynolds, DSO, formerly the wife of John Dane Player, of the John Player & Sons Tobacco Co, who had cited Manton in his own divorce proceedings. She became after Manton's death Lady Brownlow, having married, as his 3rd. wife, Peregrine Cust, 6th Baron Brownlow
of Belton House, Grantham.
Manton had been a jockey under National Hunt Rules in the 1920s and later travelled in India and South America for the British Bloodstock Agency. He became an owner and breeder of racehorses at his stud at Plumpton Place
, Lewes in Sussex and a director of Newmarket Bloodstock Ltd, in partnership with his younger brother The Hon. Robert Fraser Watson.
He sold the Compton Verney estate, not without having removed some of the mediaeval stained glass from the Verney Chapel - causing some well merited criticism - to Samuel Lamb and his family in 1922. Shortly thereafter he sold the Manton
racehorse training establishment near Marlborough, Wilts., which had been purchased by his father, who had produced considerable success on the Turf therefrom during his short period of ownership, and from which he had taken his title. On his death in 1968 the title passed to his son by Alethea Langdale, Rupert Watson, 3rd Baron Manton
