Bishop Murry attended Camden Catholic High School
. His undergraduate studies were at St. Joseph's College
in Philadelphia, St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, Connecticut
and received a B.A. in Philosophy at St. Mary's Seminary
in Baltimore
. He obtained an M.Div.

Bishop Murry served as a university professor, President of Archbishop Carroll High School
in Washington, DC, and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Detroit, before being appointed Auxiliary Bishop
of Chicago by Pope John Paul II
in 1995.
In May 1998, the Pope John Paul II appointed him Coadjutor Bishop
of St. Thomas
in the Virgin Islands. In July 1999 he was appointed Bishop of St. Thomas
. On January 30, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI
appointed him as the fifth Bishop of Youngstown. (Herbert Bevard
, then Msgr. and then-pastor of St. Athanasius parish in the city and Archdiocese of Philadelphia, was appointed to succeed Bishop Murry in the Diocese of St. Thomas.)
Bishop Murry has served on numerous boards, including those of the University of Detroit, St. Joseph's University, Mount St. Mary's College, Loyola Academy in Detroit, and Loyola University Chicago. Presently, he is a member of the board of Fairfield University, and Catholic Relief Services. He was recently elected chairman of the United States Catholic Bishops Committee on Domestic Policy and invited onto the board of directors for the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio.
