The U-513 was a type IXC submarine. She was delivered on 26 May 1941 from the naval construction firm Deutsche Werft AG, Hamburg, and commissioned on 10 January 1942. Her commanders were Korvkpt. Rolf Rüggeberg (January 1942 to April 1943) and Kptlt. Friedrich Guggenberger
(May 1943 to July 1943). Her training cruise was from 10 January 1942 to 31 August 1942, as part of the 4th U-boat Flotilla. After that, she was attached to the 10th U-boat Flotilla. She sank six ships with total tonnage of and damaged two ships with total tonnage of . She was sunk by depth charges released from a US Navy Mariner aircraft (Squadron VP-74/P-5) in the South Atlantic Ocean with 46 deaths and seven survivors.
