Gesellschaft zur Verbreitung wissenschaftlicher Kenntnisse (Society for the dissemination of scientific knowledge) was a cultural center of the VEB

founded in 1954 and dissolved in 1990 whose goal was to educate the East German population, especially in the fields of science, technology, medicine, economics and other fields of social sciences.
The society was primarily for a general diffusion of scientific knowledge and promoting understanding of new technologies and the popularization of the sciences. It used DT64 including broadcasts on television in the GDR.In addition, it published popular science magazines and promoted further education for school teachers, organizing lectures, panel discussions and individual events on related subjects.
After the political changes of 1989 and the reunification of Germany in 1991 Bundesverband Neue Urania ("Association of New Urania") was founded.
