. He graduated from East Central State College
in Ada, Oklahoma
in 1968. In 1972, Morgan earned a Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern College of Optometry
in Memphis, Tennessee
before turning professional at golf later that year. He is a member of Sigma Tau Gamma
fraternity. Although he won only seven events on the PGA Tour
between 1977 and 1990 and didn't win a major
until the Senior Tour
, he was one of the most consistent top five finishers on the Tour during this period. The most prestigious tournament he won on the PGA Tour was the 1978 World Series of Golf. He played on the 1979 and 1983 Ryder Cup
teams.
In the 1992 U.S. Open
at Pebble Beach
, Morgan was the first man to reach 10-under-par in the championships history when he made birdie on the third hole of the third round. He added a further two birdies to go to 12-under-par by the seventh hole, seven strokes clear of the field, before he began to struggle. He finished the day on 4-under, still leading, but the following day a final-round 81 left him at 5-over-par, eight behind eventual winner Tom Kite
, and in a tie for 13th place. Morgan also led the 1976 PGA Championship
after 36 holes but finished T8.
He became eligible to play on the Champions Tour
in 1996, and has enjoyed considerably more success at that level than he did on the regular tour, with 25 wins to his credit. Three of his wins have come in senior majors
