Giorgi Baramidze

Giorgi Baramidze was born in 1968, in Tbilisi. He graduated from Technical University of Georgia, majoring in chemical technology. He has conducted scientific researches and is the author of several academic publications. Giorgi Baramidze was one of the founders and key members of the anti-Soviet student movement and supporter of Georgia’s independence at the Technical University. He participated in rescue-restoration efforts of some Georgian historical and cultural monuments.
Since1989 he became one of the founders of the Green Movement of Georgia and a member of its Steering Council. In 1990 he became one of the initiators of forming Green Party of Georgia and a member of the party’s political committee. In 1990 he participated in establishing of the Georgian Green Party, and is one of the founders and activists of the political committee of the Green Party.
Since 1992 has worked in the Committee of Human Rights and National Minorities, as a Head of Department.
From the first days after the conflict started in Abkhazia he commanded a humanitarian center for the assistance of the Abkhaz population under the auspices of the Green Party of Georgia. Later, Giorgi Baramidze commanded State Center for Search of the Missing and Freeing Prisoners. Due to his zealous efforts up to 3000 peaceful population left in the conflict zone as hostages controlled by separatists were evacuated and another 200 Georgian prisoners were freed; he partook in combat operations in Ochamchire, (village of Labra) and Sokhumi.
Since 1992 he was elected as a Member of Parliament of Georgia and became Chair of the Commission for the Protection of Human Rights and National Minorities, member of the Defense and Security Committee, as well as member of a state coordinating committee for NATO «Partnership for Peace» program.
In 1995, Giorgi Baramidze graduated from the George C. Marshall Center for European Security Studies and Defence Economics in Garmisch, Germany.
In 1995, during Parliamentary elections he was elected as Didube district majority member of the Parliament.
Giorgi Baramidze is one of the founders of the Citizen’s Union of Georgia (CUG) and Deputy Chairman of the Union. In 1995-1996 he was Acting Secretary-General of CUG.
In 1995, he was elected as a Member of Parliament of Georgia from Didube district of Tbilisi.
From 1996, he was elected as a Chairman of the temporary anticorruption Investigation Commission of Parliament of Georgia. As a result of the work of the Commission he masterminded to have the following Ministers resign: D. Gulua (Agriculture), P. Injia (Communications and Postage), D. Zubitashvili (Energy), D. Iakobidze (Finance) and D. Eliashvili (Chairman of Department of Gas of Georgia), the committee also concluded the return of up to 8 Mil. GEL worth of hotel infrastructure stock package in Gudauri to state ownership.
In 1996, he was elected as a Chairman of the parliamentary fraction of the Citizen’s Union of Georgia.
In 1997, he was the initiator of forming Georgian Government’s and Georgia and «UN» joint development program draft «Corruption Investigation Center», and became the first National Director.
In July 1998 he resigned from the position of Chairman of faction Union of Citizens and Parliament’s Anti-Corruption Commission.
From 1998 he went to Georgetown University School of Diplomacy, where he, as an associate of the University studied and simultaneously did research for a year together with Senator Carl Levin (Democrat from Michigan) on matters of politics of the US state agencies and their functions. He also studied Political and Security Cooperation Mechanisms of US and Caucasus.
In 1999, he worked in the US Senate Committee on Armed Forces with Senator Carl Levin.
In 1999, was elected as a Member of Parliament of Georgia from Didube district of Tbilisi.
In 2000, was elected as a Chairman of Defence and Security Committee of Parliament of Georgia.
In 2002, was elected as a Chairman of the Faction of United Democrats of the Parliament of Georgia.
In 2003, was elected as a Member of Parliament of Georgia from Didube district of Tbilisi.
In 2003, was appointed on a position of Minister for Internal Affairs of Georgia.
In June, 2004, was appointed on a position of Minister for Defense of Georgia.
Since December, 2004 - State Minister of Georgia on European and Euro-Atlantic Integration.
In April, 2006 (to present) he was appointed as the Vice Prime-Minister of Georgia.
Apart from Georgian (native), he speaks English, Russian, and French.
