She held a number of speaker positions for the Conservatives, among them financial, foreign, and EU policy, and was Vice-Chairman of the parliamentary party group from 2001 to 2004.

On January 29, 2008, she left the party in protest against the party's status as a right-wing party, which conflicted with her own original desire to form a centrist party rejecting the influence of the Danish People's Party

In July 2008, she announced that she would leave parliament as of September 2008 to become secretary general of the WWF
