Global Design Effort
Encyclopedia
The Global Design Effort (GDE) is an international team tasked with designing the International Linear Collider
(ILC), a particle accelerator
to succeed current machines such as the Large Hadron Collider
(LHC) and the Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC). The goal of the GDE is to produce an ILC Technical Design Report by the end of 2012 which will be used to decide the future of the project. The Global Design Effort is currently headed by Barry Barish of Caltech, former director of the LIGO
laboratory.
International Linear Collider
The International Linear Collider is a proposed linear particle accelerator. It is planned to have a collision energy of 500 GeV initially, and, if approved after the project has published its Technical Design Report, planned for 2012, could be completed in the late 2010s. A later upgrade to 1000...
(ILC), a particle accelerator
Particle accelerator
A particle accelerator is a device that uses electromagnetic fields to propel charged particles to high speeds and to contain them in well-defined beams. An ordinary CRT television set is a simple form of accelerator. There are two basic types: electrostatic and oscillating field accelerators.In...

Large Hadron Collider
The Large Hadron Collider is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator. It is expected to address some of the most fundamental questions of physics, advancing the understanding of the deepest laws of nature....

LIGO
LIGO, which stands for the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, is a large-scale physics experiment aiming to directly detect gravitational waves. Cofounded in 1992 by Kip Thorne and Ronald Drever of Caltech and Rainer Weiss of MIT, LIGO is a joint project between scientists at MIT,...
