Global Water Partnership

The Global Water Partnership (GWP), is an international network that offers practical advice for sustainably managing water resources. It promotes and supports activities that operate at the national and regional levels of development. In addition to development agencies and country members the GWP includes NGOs and research organizations.
The GWP was founded in 1996 with the support of the World Bank
, the United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency
.
The network is open to all organisations involved in water resources management: developed and developing country government institutions, agencies of the United Nations, bi- and multi-lateral development banks, professional associations, research institutions, non-governmental organisations, and the private sector.
The GWP network works in 13 regions: Southern Africa, Eastern Africa, Central Africa, West Africa, the Mediterranean, Central and Eastern Europe, Caribbean, Central America, South America, Central Asia and the Caucasus, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and China. The GWP Secretariat is located in Stockholm, Sweden.
The network is supported financially by Canada, Denmark, the European Commission, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The GWP network has more than 2,400 partners in 158 countries in 13 regions.
History
The concept for the Global Water Partnership grew out of the 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Environment, the 1977 Mar del Plata Conference, the Dublin statement from the January 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), the "Protection of the Quality & Supply of Freshwater Resources: Application of Integrated Approaches to the Development, Management & Use of Water Resources" statement (Chapter 18 of Agenda 21 from the Rio Conference), and general dissatisfaction with the lack of sustainability analysis in setting water policy goals and in water planning.The GWP was founded in 1996 with the support of the World Bank

Operations
GWP fosters integrated water resource management (IWRM) and provides a forum for dialogue among corporations, governmental agencies, water users, and environmental groups to promote stability through sustainable water resources development, management and use.The network is open to all organisations involved in water resources management: developed and developing country government institutions, agencies of the United Nations, bi- and multi-lateral development banks, professional associations, research institutions, non-governmental organisations, and the private sector.
