Tribe of Washington State. She is one of the founding members of the Northwest Native American Writers Association.

Bird has received two grants for her writing, the Oregon Institute of Literary Arts' "Oregon Writer's Grant" in 1988 and the Witter-Bynner Foundation grant in 1993.
