Gobio gobio, or the gudgeon, is a species of freshwater fish in the Cyprinidae family.
This small fish is widely distributed across northern Eurasia.
The gudgeon inhabits all kinds of lake and river habitats with sand bottom. It is a gregarious species, and feeds on benthic invertebrates. Life span is up to five years. Gudgeons are usually smaller than 12 cm, rarely over 15 cm long.
It spawns over the spring-summer season, when water temperature is above 13 C. Spawning takes place in shallow waters, on sand or on stones or vegetation, the eggs stick to the substrate.
