While deriving its name Golders Green
from the suburb of the same name, it is not adjacent to Golders Green. It was built by the Laing company after the Handley Page factory and aerodrome (Cricklewood Aerodrome) closed in 1929. The aerodrome had become unviable as it became surrounded by suburban development.
