named Irv Bennett (Brendan Fraser
). Nancy is horrified to learn that Irv will be replacing her rather than working for her, given viewer demand for an intelligent, professional meteorologist instead of an entertaining but hopelessly inaccurate 'weather girl'. Though not let go outright, Nancy finds herself sitting uselessly around the news studio with nothing to do. Dale
and Peggy
realize that Nancy is in danger of losing her job with Channel 84 and try convincing her to tap into her innate penchant for emotionally destroying people. All of her attempts to appeal to any of Irv's insecurities fail, however, and she falls deeper into hopelessness.
Soon afterward, the studio receives word of a breaking-news subject: a large wildfire is raging out of control near Arlen. The studio manager calls for all-hands participation on the studio floor; Nancy has a brief moment of hope before being told to go home in case her desk is needed as extra space. As Nancy mopes about her house, indignantly watching Irv's reports on how the weather is affecting the fire, Peggy gets an idea: Nancy can no longer wait for the news to come to her, she has to go to the news. To that end, Nancy, Peggy, and Dale steal a Channel 84 news van and head to a 'media zone' set aside some distance from the wildfire. Upon seeing all the other news crews present, they decide that they must go one better and actually drive up to the wildfire itself for a truly great news report. Peggy and Dale film as Nancy reports on the advancing fire. Meanwhile, the studio discovers her transmitted footage, and begins broadcasting it.
As Peggy and Dale encourage Nancy to keep reporting, none of them notice that the flames have crept up on them until they find themselves completely surrounded by fire. The news van explodes from the flames and the transmission ceases; back in the studio the staff reroute her transmission through a news van they had originally sent to the media zone, as Nancy begins to sob hysterically about how she had just wanted to keep her job and doesn't want to die. The studio staff alert the fire crews to Nancy's whereabouts and cheer jubilantly over the great footage they're getting in the meantime, and Nancy, Dale, and Peggy are eventually airlifted to safety. Because of the high demand for Nancy's footage from other studios, the studio manager happily overlooks the stolen and destroyed news van, and Nancy reclaims her place on the Channel 84 News team, this time in her new role as co-anchor.
