The Govana Libre is a Scottish
cocktail based primarily on dark rum. The cocktail was invented in 2009 after a competition was raised by both the City of Glasgow and the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Glasgow
. Its name is a play on words of the Havana Libre (an alternative name for the Cuba Libre
) and Govan
, the area where the inventor was born. It is influenced by iconic Cuban cocktails such as the Mojito
, Daiquiri
as well as the Mexican Margarita
. It is produced by bruising a sprig of fresh lime into sugar cane syrup before adding ice into a cocktail shaker. Dark rum, and fresh lime juice are then added before the ingredients are shaken together. The ingredients are then strained into a cocktail glass over crushed ice. The drink is topped up with a dash of lemonade and a dash of grenadine
and a lime garnish is added before serving. The drink was invented by Govan
