Established in 2005, Government Canyon State Natural Area is 18 square miles (46.6 km²) of rugged hills and canyons typical of the Texas

The reserve is located in the extreme NW corner of Bexar County, and protects a large, relatively pristine area of Hill Country terrain, numerous and diverse species of plants & wildlife, and a critical aquifer recharge zone for the City of San Antonio's water system.
In September, 2009, the City of San Antonio transferred 2962 acres (12 km²) of land to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept. for inclusion in the Natural Area, specifically to ensure long-term aquifer protection, and thereby increasing the total acreage within the reserve from 8,624 to 11,576.
GCSNA is open to the public 4 days (Fri. - Mon.) each week, weather permitting, and offers 40 miles (64.4 km) of hiking trails.
