History

The Government college , Kattappana is the fulfillment of a long cherished need of the High ranges. The Government of Kerala took the decision to start a college at kattappana in July 1977. Prof.R.Balakrishnan Nair took charge as the first principal of the college on 26 July 1977.The affiliation was granted by the University of kerala to start a junior college with two batches Pre-degree students having a strength of 30 each for third and fourth groups .The classes started on 18 August 1977.The university of Kerala accorded sanction for starting a unit of NSS during the academic year 1979-1980.The college was upgraded in the year 1989 by introducing B.A Economics as main and Indian History and Political science as subsidiaries. B.Com course was started in the year 1990 with co-operation as elective subject . B.A Malayalam was started in 1993 with Sanskrit and Kerala culture as subsidiary papers . B.Sc Chemistry was started in 1998 with Physics and Mathematics as subsidiaries. B.sc Mathematics was started in 1999 with Physics and statistics as subsidiary papers. M.A Malayalam was started in the year 1999.
The permanent affiliation for the college was granted by the Mahathma Gandhi university,Kottayam in the year 1994.

. Institute is a 3 floor building with all modern amnesties in it. It is situated on a beautiful wind blowing hill which is just 1.5 k.m away from kattappana main town.

Majority of students of the institute are day scholars, while a small percentage who comes from faraway places stay at nearby lodges. For their convenience construction of new boy's hostel has been proposed near to institute main building. Mahatma Gandhi university has announced a project a develop a biodiversity park in campus of Government college, Kattappana.The groves, highlighting the biodiversity of plants, will be created and preserved by the National Service Scheme (NSS), in association with Green Leaf, a non-governmental organization engaged in planting and preserving trees in public places for the past two decades.
