, where she lived until she began her university education at the University of Strathclyde. She studied Politics and English, and also completed a Masters there. A lifelong interest in writing led to her working for 'Cut' magazine while an undergraduate, and a number of local and Scottish publications from that time. When she graduated, she lectured in Politics at the University of Edinburgh, as well as Stirling University and the Open University. She was also a non-clinical lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Edinburgh, the co-ordinator of the Gender Studies Network in Lothian, and a course writer in Economics for the Open University. She became a regular contributor to The Scotsman
