from the University of Auckland
and received both an Master of Arts and Doctor of Science
from St Catharine's College, Cambridge
. As a scholar, Professor Davies has taught metallurgy

and has served as Chief Executive of the Universities Funding Council (UFC) and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). He is also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering
